End-of-season excitement levels have reached fever pitch as a travelling posse of around 200, plus some independents, get set to head west for the 2024 Siam Cup, sponsored by Spring Insure.
Guernsey Raiders will host four matches, played back-to-back on the main pitch at their Footes Lane HQ across an eight-hour period.
The red side of the Channel Islands will travel as holders of all four trophies after a sweep on home turf last May. This was just the second time a 4-0 scoreline had been registered on Siam Cup day, the previous occasion being in the Raiders’ favour in 2018.
Veteran players from the two Islands will kick the day off, having enjoyed some good tussles for the Nash Cup in recent years, albeit Jersey pressed the ‘all-star’ button two years ago for an 81-5 win. But 2023 was much closer, finishing 31-24 to Jersey Wanderers at full-time.
After an interruption of four years, the Fallaize Cup for 2nd XVs was contested again last year and went the hosts’ way by 41-26 thanks to a late flurry of scoring.
JRFC Women won the Siam for the first time in May 2022, beating the old enemy 40-0 on home turf in what was officially the 2021 contest after pandemic-related delays. That meant Siam hostilities were staged on a back-to-back basis, with the Raiders snatching back the trophy thanks to a 13-12 win at Footes Lane seven days later. But it was red ribbons back on the trophy 12 months ago in what was the most one-sided of the four games, Jersey’s girls winning 31-5.
The back-to-back games were a painful experience for Jersey’s Men, who conceded a total of 114 points in 160 minutes as Guernsey extracted revenge for the 14-13 defeat they suffered on home soil in the 2020 Siam, which was contested at Footes Lane in November 2021 (again as a result of the pandemic). A year ago it was a tight game in which Jersey were ahead by just 20-18 early in the second period, but the hosts finished strongly to take the win by 42-25.
Head Coach Myles Landick hands Siam debuts to four of his 21-man squad: starting backs Sam Harvey and Scott Van Breda, plus replacements Gene Syminton and James Mitchell.
Around 120 members of the official party will be staying over in Guernsey, hoping to keep hold of the Siam trophies won last year.
Saturday’s games will be streamed live via the BBC Jersey Facebook pages, as well as radio commentary.
